A Great Loss

Normally, when celebrity dies I may be saddened but it doesn't impact me much...People die...When the great chef Charlie Trotter died, I was greatly saddened...When a celebrity commits suicide, well, for a long time, I shit on them...I understand people have demons, and deal with shit like depression...I do as well, but I have a hard time accepting people who have all the ability and wealth to get the help they need...But this blog isn't about that...It's about the loss of a culinary icon...

Up until 3 years ago, I spent my entire working life in the restaurant business...For a lot of that time, I didn't brag about what I did...I actually felt uncomfortable talking about it...Many people look down on the service industry...Yeah, they want people to wait on them and cook for them and serve them, but they don't really want to know you...Those people are fucking assholes!

I don't even know what my parents thought of my career path...Once they realized I was good at it, I think they were fine with it, but few parents out there are ever saying, 'God I hope my kid grows up to work 70 hour weeks for shit pay, high blood pressure and a drinking problem!'

Then one day I was in a Borders Book Store...Remember those places? I saw Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential"....I bought and had read it twice in a week...It's the book I wanted to write but didn't have nearly the experience to do...It was brutally honest and talked about the shit that's never talked about when it comes to the restaurant business...He was one us...Started at the bottom and worked his way up...

The Food Network had been around awhile but it was bullshit...Emeril was a hack that made people think all chefs had or needed a catch phrase...Fuck all That! (that was ours at the Fish House)...Rachel Ray never was and never will be a chef...She was a made for TV salesperson...But Bourdain opened people's eyes to the grind...

Suddenly I felt I could hold my high about what I did for a living...As his popularity grew, it opened many more doors for other real chefs, and opened many more eyes of the public about our industry...His show "No Reservations" took people all over as he taught us about food and cultures so many of us never experienced...and many would be too afraid to try...And when he went to big cities like Boston, he wasn't taking us to big name places and big name chefs...He showed us the underbelly of the culinary scene...Hard working, hard living, chefs taking shit to the next level and not getting the fanfare and not even seeking it...He delved into the underground music scenes, and took us to hidden gems...

Then with his CNN show "Parts Unknown" he took that same format to the next level...Exploring cultures, religions, history and yes, food, from all over the world...He shared the stories of legendary people, that we never knew of...Little tidbits of history they don't teach in school...And the food and drinks...So much we never knew about...so much we want to try now...And one of the greatest things he did.....He championed the little guy...The Hungarian film editor...The no name indie musician...The Detroit chef, in a dead part of town, starting a public garden and making amazing, yet affordable cuisine, hoping to be a small part of turning things around.

Anthony Bourdain was great chef, who started in the dish-pit...If he never wrote great books and did great TV shows, he still would have been a great chef that achieved more than so many of us dream of...But he took his culinary knowledge and his easy way with people, and was able to teach us so much more, about food and culture and humanity...

I don't know what drove him to take his own life and I am greatly saddened by it...I feel he had so much more to tell us and teach us...Maybe I'm just selfish because someone I looked up to is gone...

Guilty Pleasures (vol. 2)

"American Pickers"....No, she's not one of them, but better looking then the two stars...And her tits aren't covered in tats like the chick on the show...

I have always hated "Reality TV" and refuse to watch...Yes, I've watched things like Chopped...I did a couple of seasons of Hell's Kitchen, but come on, that one is so scripted it's unreal...But otherwise, no way...And I have had countless rants about how annoying I find it that The History Channel has "Reality Shows" about pawn shops and building motorcycles and whatever else...I love History...I loved the History Channel...My Dad always called it the "Hitler Channel," because in the early days it was all WWII and Hitler stuff...

Then a few years ago, I was picking the kids up from my parents house...They were having a snack and glued to the TV...They just ignored me...My dad walked me into the kitchen and told me how they love this show, and he was explaining it to me...I thought it was really weird that kids were enthralled by a couple of guys, Mike Wolfe from Iowa, and Frank Fritz from Illinois, rummaging through people's junk...And really that's how I was viewing it as I caught glimpses of the show...It seemed odd that this is something that would catch my father's eye, let alone, my kids wanting to sit calmly and watch it...

I blew it off...Where is my Hitler coverage...Show me some footage of  U.S. ships shooting down Japanese Zeros...

So one day I'm sitting in my chair, relaxing, flipping around the tube with the remote...My son walks in..."Wait, stop, I love this show!"  It was American Pickers on The History Channel...So, as I often do, I give in to what the kids want to watch, unless Hockey is on!  Then My daughter comes down stairs..."Oh, I love this one!"

What!?!   How often did they watch this at my folks?

So, I sat there and watched this show...I had to see what it was all about...So these guys are dealing with hoarders, and collectors, and digging through junk...And they are buying things that I would never think to buy...Haggling over prices that I would never pay...But then, they would cut in with little tidbits about these items...Giving the history of them...What they were used for, where they were made, when they started disappearing...

As the show went on, they're buying old bike, motorcycle, and car parts...Buying old cars...Buying old Texaco signs...Old school Coke machines my kids never saw, and I only saw in movies...Old toys...My kids love when they came across vintage toys from the 60, 50's, 40's, 30's, 20's...What!  It's amazing the condition some of these things are in...

After a little while, I was hooked...Why? Because as they say in their tag line, "We make a living telling the history of America...one piece at a time."


The show really does fill you in with a ton of History...And these guys are serious Motorcycle and Car guys...I'm so far from that it's unreal...But I have found myself learning about the little details about why this company did this, and why that company  did that...Why they stopped making this thing...And so much of the stuff, the old signs, and the old odd pieces here and there that were in some long lost Soda Fountain, or General Store...It takes you back to a different time...I think a better time...

I've got going to Memphis and Nashville, both great music cities, on my bucket list...When I get to Nashville, I'll be making a stop at Mike's second store, to checkout some overpriced junk, from our country's great past...

I also, out of nowhere, all because of this show, really want a 40's era Knucklehead with a sidecar...

Monday Moaning

There's a lot shit going on in the "news" and it's all pretty fucking annoying to me....I truly, honestly, don't give a damn about Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner...I'm all for people being happy with who they are, you want to change your sex, go ahead...I've always supported equals rights for EVERYONE...That includes celebritards who are fucking media whores...Do what you want, I just don't give shit...I won't be watching your fucking show, and I won't be following you on Twitter...

Then there was a lot of stink, because the super media whore factory ESPN, has decided to give Jenner their big Arthur Ashe award at their annual 'Let's pat ourselves on our backs' award show, The Espy's...The laundry list of athletes more worthy was widely reported...ESPN doesn't care, they are looking at selling ad time because they will be hyping the drama of seeing a former male, U.S. Olympic gold medalist, wearing a lovely evening gown...I have never watched the Espy's and I won't this year...

Next pile of shit I don't care about...These fucking Duggar people...Holy fucking shit...The Television industry should be ashamed of itself already...All this so-called "Reality TV" bullshit is such fucking nonsense....These fuckers have '19 Kids and Counting"...That's the name of their show...I've never watched, because I'm not fucking idiot...But I looked into them a bit after the news about their one asshole son broke...These people are full-blown-bat-shit-crazy!  Just fucked in the head...Then it comes out there one son has molested multiple girls...Including two of their daughters, HIS SISTERS!...They covered it up...They tried to "get him help"...The father even went to try to justify it by saying he did most of his molesting, "Over the clothes".....These fuckers can't die fast enough!  I'm still trying to figure out why the parents aren't in jail for covering it up...

Then I saw family members blaming the media for leaking the story out there, and 'Doing this to our lives." Really cunts!?!  You put your idiot life on TV...You have no problem with the media paying your fucking bills, to feed all those fucking mouths, but now the media is evil!  Again, these people can't die fast enough!

Now, I live in Cleveland, but I have made it clear over the years that I don't like or follow basketball...And I have made it clear over the years, that I don't like LeBron James at all...(Long before "The Decision" I wrote about my distain for him)...So the Cavaliers are in the Finals, but I'm not willing to be Johnny Bandwagon...I'm not going to suddenly write like I know something about Basketball...I'm not even watching....If the Cavs win, I will not celebrate it, I won't suddenly be wearing Cavs gear...I will be happy for my friends who support the Cavs, but I'll stay true to myself, and remain not a basketball fan, and a LeBron James fan...

I did hear about the Kyrie Irving injury, and I saw the entire national media basically say that the Cavaliers have no chance...All I will say about this America, and Cleveland....The National Media is wrong more often then they are right...Just look to Vegas kids...Since the Irving broke his knee-cap, and media put the nail in the Cavs coffin, there has been a lot more money in Vegas being put on James and the Cavaliers...I put more stock in what the books are saying then the media....

-Saturday, American Pharoah won the Belmont Stakes, and completed the Triple Crown...The first time in 37 years....I'll be honest, I'm a cynical bastard...I had my money Frosted...I had American Pharoah coming in second...I mean shit, There have been a bunch of Triple Crown hopefuls in my lifetime, and I have seen them all fail...And while watching the Kentucky Derby, I really like how Frosted closed...I told my wife that day, "Frosted will win at Belmont."  Well, fuck me, I was wrong...

As they came around the last turn Frosted had started charging from the back, and was quickly in second coming down the stretch...Pharoah had been leading the whole way...Frosted was surging...But some how, American Pharoah just kept cruising...The horse just ran a smooth race, and finished five and a half lengths ahead of Frosted...The horse didn't even look tired...

Now American Pharoah, as long as his owners aren't stupid, is looking forward to a wonderful life...They shouldn't run this horse again...Don't even take a chance at a loss, or an injury...Just put him out to Stud... a life a relaxation, eating, and fucking! (Ahhhh, my dream!)  That's gonna be some expensive sperm!

-The Stanley Cup Finals were evened up Saturday as Tampa Bay pulled out the win...They seemed to push the tempo most of the game...The Strangest part of the game was Lightning goalie Ben Bishop coming out of the game twice in the third period...The second time for good...20 year old Andrei Vasilevsky filled the relief role well...He was tested heavily, and held the lead his team gave him...

The Lightning are not saying what caused Bishop to leave the game, and they are not saying who will start game 3 Monday night in Chicago...Some have speculated that it was a leg injury after Bishop was run into by Antoine Vermette...There are others that are speculating that Bishop had a case of the green apple splatters, and couldn't hold it...Vasilevsky looked calm in relief, and is a highly touted young goalie...And considering the inconsistent play of Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford, I'm not sure if it matters if either team needs to go with a their backup goalie...

Monday Moaning

Here we are again...Looking down the barrel of another long, work week...I'm really starting to get tired of how quickly the weekends fly by...But then again, maybe the weekends won't get past me as quick, once I'm not sitting in the cold rain, watching my local Brooklyn Hurricanes High School football team, play like shit...Browns fans are pretty unhappy with Pat Shurmur...And we'll get to him later, but this high school coach is a complete fuck-tard...

Then there are the parents who were screaming at the refs Friday night, after a 30+ yard TD run was called back for holding...Well, I know you're parents and I get you supporting the kids, but if the D-lineman is dragging an O-lineman who is clutching at the back of his jersey...IT"S FUCKING HOLDING!  This team isn't win-less because of the refs...They lack size, experience, talent, discipline, and good coaching...Bitch at the coaches for only having 10 men on the field far too often...Bitch at the coaches for not teaching them to zone block properly, or not hold...Blame the coaches for not working more with Johnny Throw Another Pick...

Holy shit, I just defended refs!

-Then comes Saturday, which I spend a ton of time watching College Football...And then going through College Football notes, to decide what I'll write about for Sunday's  WRAP_UP...

Although this Saturday we started the day at Toys-R-Us...The Little Beeze had a  few gift cards burning a hole in his pocket, from his birthday...He loaded up on some Club Penguin toys, and some Angry Birds...he also let his older sister get a doll...Pretty cool of an 8 year old boy to do...He also grabbed some Angry Birds Star Wars toys...But they couldn't ring them up...They informed us that they aren't allowed to sell them yet...So answer me this..."WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE A HUGE SHELF FULL OF THESE TOYS, IF YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO SELL THEM YET!?!"

They apologized, and then we were asked to leave...Fuck them!

-Sunday, I did yard work during the Browns game...It finally wasn't raining, and shit needed to get done...And I decided I'd rather watch the Patriots/Jets game, then watch the Browns lay another steaming pile of shit...

 
Last week Fatty, Walrus, Holmgren was shown the door....Sadly, in a polite way...He was given the chance to say he's retiring after this year, and will help with the transition that is going on...GM Tom Heckert has been looking for a job since the news of the sale broke in August...And after what I heard on the radio from fans Sunday, and what I saw on Twitter...Pat Shurmur better start looking, because if the new boss Jimmy Haslan doesn't run him out of here soon, the fans will...Dude, you lost to the Colts...From what I saw, Weeden played well...better then Luck...But the Browns only ran it 17 times, for 55 yards...What the fuck did they draft Trent Richardson for?  we already have water boys!

As for the Patriots, they beat the Jets 29-26...While it's a win, it's disappointing...The Pats defense better start knuckling up, because giving up 26 to the shitty Jets is just bad...

-Hey the Red Sox have a new manager...Their former pitching coach under Francona...They traded an average SS to the Blue Jays for their manager...What the fuck is that...I'll tell you what that is...That's making the fans happy, because it's a guy they like and know...And it's making the players happy, because it's a guy they like and know...Fuck everything else...One year of headaches was enough!

-The latest BCS Rankings came out Sunday night...There has been a slight change that will get some people in the Pacific Northwest upset...Here's the top 5...

1. Alabama...2. Florida...3. Kansas State...4. Oregon...5. Notre Dame...Honestly, at the start of the season, I looked at Alabama as the best team out there...But these rankings are suppose to be based on a number of things, and Alabama hasn't played much of a schedule yet...Especially compared to Kansas State, Florida, and Notre Dame...Oregon is an offensive power-house, but their defense has shown squat so far, so any crying they're doing can stop until they stop some one...I would have K-State above Florida and 'Bama, but I can accept Florida ahead of them...This season wasn't expected from them, and thrashing South Carolina this week proved they've earned it so far...Things are going to be interesting...

But the slight that would have me pissed if I lived in Oregon, would be the fact that the undefeated Oregon State Beavers are sitting at 7, behind LSU...That is just fucking garbage...These asshole continue to overrate LSU...Undefeated Miss State should be ahead of LSU instead of at 11...

The 7-0 Ohio University Bobcats finally made it in at 24...Still too low, but at least some people are taking notice...

(16) Louisville and (15) Rutgers didn't move up as much as they hoped after Temple gave Rutgers and early scare, and and USF gave Louisville a late scare...

-So I was watching the Steelers and Bengals game...It went to a commercial...There's Brad Pitt standing there...Talking...Sounding all deep, and spiritual, like he's about to hit us with some serious shit, that only a Hollywood douchebag can clue us in on...But then it ended...





Are you fucking kidding me!?!  Even my wife broke off a "What the fuck!"

Seriously...Are all those adopted kids making things that tight, that you're being all deep, and emotional about Chanel No. 5....You know what dude...Put a fucking dick in your mouth and choke on the load! 

The only thing that made me more disgusted with TV today was a commercial for a show called "South Beach Tow"...




Is this really what our world has come to...A so-called reality show about obnoxious douchebags towing cars...Everyone in this show looks like people who get fired from dish washing jobs...Enough with the not-so-reality TV...Lets get back to writing, and filming quality shows...And History Channel, lets get back to History, instead of assholes in a pawn shop...It scares me, what America is becoming...

Monday Moaning

Well, Monday is here again...And let me tell ya, my Monday is going to suck...Both the Little Beeze and Molly are having dental work done...They're both being put under anesthesia...The boy has a lot of extra nerves in his mouth, and while they were fixing a cavity, he felt everything...They numbed him 4 times, and gave him laughing gas...It was brutal...

And Molly started grinding her teeth as soon as they started coming in...She chipped all for of her top front teeth, and they've been slowly eroding away...Say they are putting her under to fix those...Then afterwards we'll get to deal crankiness, and I'll bet some stomach issues...Which will suck since they aren't allowed to eat or drink anything in the morning beforehand...I just hope it all goes okay...

Then Tuesday, the Little Beeze and his big sister have their first day at their new school...And while the boy's teacher doesn't dress like the teacher above there, but she's alright! I've got all week to get into the morning routine, since I took a week of vacation time...

Onto sports, Saturday night I finally posted my HEISMAN_WATCH...It took me awhile, but I'm finally getting pumped for College Football...

Then there was the news that broke about LANCE_ARMSTRONG...I know plenty of people didn't agree with my view, but I have a hard time thinking a guy who gives up the fight, is innocent...

But there is something in the sports world that was sticking in my head all this weekend...The ESPN networks aired a dozen High School Football games between Friday and Sunday...Now how many times have we heard or read guys on ESPN bitch about how college athletes should get paid to some degree, since the NCAA, and the Universities are making so much money on the backs of these kids...So why is it okay for ESPN to make advertising bucks airing high school games? They're doing the same thing that many of their talking heads have complained about...

Listen, local games have been aired for years...But "The World Wide Leader" showing a dozen games over the weekend, just seems like high school sports are about to get seriously corrupted...

But hell, why am I expecting so much? The fucking History Channel spends more time showing idiot programs about pawn shops, and storage lockers, instead of shit about actual history...And then the second news story Sunday morning, behind hyping up Tropical Storm Isaac, was about that stupid twat Snooki having her awful baby...Christ, there's a kid that was born with two strikes against it!

And about that storm...I was watching the Nightly News and they are talking about it having a chance of hitting New Orleans 7 years to the day that Katrina hit...You could hear the hope, and excitement in their voices...This is like a sick, voyeuristic, news wet dream...It was sickening...I really need to stop expecting so much from the world...

Monday Moaning

It doesn't which angle you look at it from...

It sucks!

This one hurts...Ryan Miller and Team U.S.A. gave it everything they had...They pushed Canada to the limit...With 24 seconds left in regulation, Zach Parise put the tying goal past Luongo...I have always felt Luongo was the most overrated, never won a damn thing goalie around...Parise's goal had my mouth watering...I started writing in my head...Just blasting the Canadian goaltender...'Here it comes...Choke time for Luongo!'

But he was bailed out 7 minutes and 40 seconds into overtime, when Sidney Crosby got one past Ryan Miller...

Vancouver erupted...Canadians everywhere were loving life...And I was in my living room...In front of our new TV (I'll get to that later)...Teaching the Little Beeze the proper usage of, "God damn, mother f**king, c*ck sucking, f**k-tard, douche bag, f**k stain, a$$hole, Crosby!"

There was pure joy on my son's face as he heard those words...Not so much on my wife's face!

I can't stand Crosby, and that goal sealed the deal...If Rick Nash would have been the one to crush my hopes...I could take that...Not Crosby...The best way I can describe my feelings...Well other then the way I just did before this...YUCK!

Congrats Canada! Great win...And honestly, it was a great game to watch...Except the ending!

The Olympics are now over...Thank God I don't have to see anymore Curling! But I did enjoy the Olympics...When the Summer Games roll around, I could give a sh!t less...I don't care about people running in a circle...Or lifting weights...Or wrestling...Or diving, and swimming..Or any of tat crap...The winter games are pretty cool...Skiing, Speed skating, Hockey, that crazy snowboard, and ski-cross...They're just hoping for people to wipe out in that!

Now NBC can go back to trying to figure out what the hell to put on besides "The Office." Oh, and Leno will be back on...Can't wait to not watch that!

So I mentioned we got a new TV...The wife has wanted one for awhile...Our old one was 27 inches...Old school...She was tired of living in the dark ages...She said, "you know how much I worked last year? I don't care if we're broke! I'm getting a new TV!" Who the f**k am I to argue with that...

Only thing is, we are broke...On this fine Monday I will be going in for some dental surgery...It's kinda major...Like knock me the f**k out and don't wake me until it stops hurting major...I've been putting it off for 9 months because of money...The pain got to the point where I couldn't put it off anymore...Our Dental insurance will only cover $1500 of it...But I have to pay up front, Half when I schedule the appointment...Then my insurance will pay me that $1500 back(can't wait to see how long that takes!)...The work I'm having done totals almost $4000....

So we took most of our tax return and used that as the down payment...Then the Mrs. put in for a medical hardship with drawl from our 401k...So we got enough to cover the rest...And a little extra...She said, "You're getting your mouth fixed...I'm getting a TV!"

So Saturday we bought a nice 42 inch LG, flat screen...Oh and a new stand/cabinet for it...It wasn't going to fit in the old entertainment center...Which weighed somewhere around 2 tons...This damn thing was solid f**king oak, over top reinforced steel...So I got that out of the house...It's on the tree lawn if anyone wants it...Put together the new one...Hooked up the TV and all the components...And by the time I was done it was 11:00 PM...Happy Saturday!

I'm glad we got the new tube...It looks great...And now it will be better to watch when the next natural disaster hits...Holy shit the media loves when awful stuff happens...Non-stop coverage of one story is bad enough...Then when it's a disaster they want the sick voyeuristic society that we are, glued to other people's misery...

I'm not making light of the earthquake in Chile...My heart goes out to the people suffering there...I'm just blasting the "News Media" for making me sick!

Then of course every camera in Hawaii was rolling...Waiting for a Tsunami to hit...Waiting to show death and destruction live on TV...The bosses must have been pissed when the days second natural disaster was a dud...

Although it would have been cool to see Dog The Bounty Hunter and his mullet washed away!

SpongeBob vs Hannah Montana

Now I knew when I became a father, that I was going to have to put up with having to watch some awful sh!t....But this is begining to get to me...I have a daughter (7) and a son (4)....I use to be able to handle the crap they watched...But now I feel I am hitting the wall....

My son use to be obsessed with Thomas the Train...and actually he still is hooked on trains, and Thomas....He plays with his millions of trains everyday...He is always drawing pictures of trains....But he doesn't watch it that much anymore...His TV watching has been consumed by SpongeBob Square Pants....I always thought of this as a stoner cartoon...Why? Because I use to work with a lot of stoners, and they loved this retarted sponge...And when you watch this, and you think wow! that sponge is retarded...Then his best friend Patrick, the big, fat, pink, starfish shows up...Holy sh!t that f*ck stain is retarded....

I'm not one of those people who freak out about the content of crap on TV...I'm just amazed by how dumb the crap out there is...It does bother me how much my son enjoys it...I fear he'll be a complete idiot...

Now my daughter went through the stages of kids shows...Now she is into the "Family" shows on Disney and such...She really like Hannah Montana....Now I'll say it's better than Spongey...But I can't stand the Bad Overacting from this little obnoxious b!tch...

I seriously hate to sound mean....But...I would get a certain amount of pleasure wrapping my hands around this chicks throat...How old is she? Is she legal yet?...She could probably use a good fisting in the ass...
