Browns Hire Pat Shurmur

The news came down this afternoon...The Cleveland Browns have decided on anew head coach...Pat Shurmur, son of Fritz Shurmur, who was Mike Holmgren's defensive coordinator in Green Bay back in 1996 when the Packers won the "Super Bowl"...

The reaction in Cleveland is mixed...Some are saying Pat Shurmur doesn't have enough experience...He's only been an offensive coordinator for two years with the Rams...Before that he was a QB's coach in Philly...Browns GM Tom Heckert worked with him there and has been high on him for awhile...

Some feel Shurmur will just be a puppet for Holmgren who they feel still is a coach, but doesn't want to put in the hours...But many of these people are also the ones that wanted Holmgren to take the job right from jump...So would it be that bad if he was playing puppet master...

Many Browns fans wanted a BIG name coach...Gruden was on every one's list...Old Walrus Holmgren said he spoke with Gruden, Cowher, and Fox, before interviewing the three others they talked to...Many feel it will be hard to land solid free-agents with a rookie coach, and a team that seems to be in a perpetual state of rebuild...

The first candidate they interviewed was Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell, another innocent victim of the "Rooney Rule"...Everyone in the free world knew the Browns wanted an offensive minded coach, Fewell didn't stand a chance...The "Rooney Rule" is becoming a joke....The other candidate was Atlanta OC Mike Mularkey, another Holmgren disciple...

Me, I'm not one of these Clevelanders who is saying, "In Holmgren we trust"...He hasn't done shit to earn my trust yet...I like GM Tom Heckert who had a very good draft last year...Oh, and he pulled off the Brady Quinn for Peyton Hillis deal! Heckert seemed very confident in the press conference today...I like that...But I'm not sure I'm sold...I didn't hear of any other teams wanting Shurmur, just the Browns...

I'm glad they brought in an offensive guy, and if they land Dick Jauron as the new Defensive Coordinator, that may ease my worries a bit more...And yes, that is the buzz around town, that the Browns are close to getting Jauron...

I'm not going to shit all over this move, and I'm not going to celebrate it either...I'm going to just wait and see...As always in Cleveland, we're waiting until next year!

Later, The Beeze.
